Digital Writer in Residence, Institute of Creative Technologies, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK

About me

Chris JosephI am a digital writer and artist who has created work since 2002 as babel. Some of my past projects include Inanimate Alice, an award-winning series of multimedia stories with the novelist Kate Pullinger; The Breathing Wall with Kate Pullinger and Stefan Schemat, a groundbreaking digital novel that responds to the reader’s breathing rate, and Animalamina, a collection of interactive poetry for children. I am currently Digital Writer in Residence at the Institute of Creative Technologies (IOCT) in De Montfort University, Leicester, UK.

The IOCT is a new space at De Montfort University that exists to foster creative research and collaboration across several disciplines that have been traditionally separate: art and design, music, humanities, computer science and engineering. It encourages transdisciplinary collaboration between individuals and organisations within the university and at local, national and international levels. In 2007 the IOCT will also offer a transdisciplinary Masters that will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

My position as Digital Writer in Residence is funded by the Arts Council, and comprises three main tasks. Firstly, to provide mentoring and support to regional digital practitioners, through workshops and creative surgeries; secondly to increase the profile of digital writing and interdisciplinary creative practice through regular IOCT Salons; and finally to respond to the work being undertaken at the IOCT in my own creative practice.

To see more of my work you can visit babel or the post-dada magazine 391.org .

To read more of my thoughts about digital writing and art, see this interview in the framed journal (Nov 2006).

Fantastic - you are so needed in the realm of the virtual. Having just defended the validity of your work would you do me the honour of replying ?!

    Hi Chris,

I couldn’t find a direct email for but wanted to send you this link to our newest global call to artists. In the past we’ve received a fair amount of digital art submissions but would like to see more. The Call is open to both 2D and 3D work and is located here: http://becagallery.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/01/global-call-to.html

    Best regards,

    Hi Melissa,

I’ve posted the call - hope you get a good number of digital submissions!

My contact details are probably too difficult to find if you come straight to the blog - I should do something about that. They can be found via the main homepage at http://www.chrisjoseph.org .

    best,
    chris
