Call for Canadian submissions - Who will give up their distinctions? - deadline 16 June 2008
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
WHO WILL GIVE UP THEIR DISTINCTIONS?
DEADLINE: 16 June 2008
http://www.cineworks.ca/2008/06/16/
Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society would like to invite Canadian independent media artists to submit proposals for an exhibition on the theme “Who will give up their distinctions?” Expanded cinema, new-media and experimental works will be given preference and Cineworks will fully support the exhibition of the chosen work[s] in our studio space for showing during the first part of September 2008.
The popular mind has become fixated once again on the politics surrounding identity. The focus is not just on how we embody our oneness, but more-so on how others reflect it back at us and/or the world. How can art undermine or challenge stereotypes while at the same time acknowledging that these stereotypes still have power? Does an emphasis on difference avoid or foster real solutions? I am black, white, yellow, red, brown. I am man, woman; young, old. But we are human, simply. How are common distinctions around identity a fruitful creative medium? Is it even ever possible to transcend difference and, if so, why bother? Think about imperatives to declare yourself and the ensuing confusion, but don’t forget how your declarations are received. Is this an age where hybrid identities are usurped by privileged aesthetics? How do hybridity and authenticity intersect? Explore the possibility to simultaneously embrace and transcend our distinctions by asking how much is enough.
Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society was established in 1980 by independent filmmakers and artists working in film. The organization has evolved to embrace a broad spectrum of media arts practices while maintaining a commitment to support artists interested in utilizing film and the cinematic experience.

Paraflows 08 - festival for digital arts and cultures.
In 2008, Paraflows 08 Utopia will try to develop linguistic roots which corresponds with last year’s exhibitions topic UN_SPACE – which dealt with non-space and impossible spaces – this year we will again strive to provide a multi-layered examination involving the overwhelming architectonic and historical reality of the venue – the MAK Gegenwartskunstdepot Gefechtsturm Arenbergpark.
In the context of the topic UTOPIA, we want to gather concepts of a possible future, draw perspectives, dreams and prognoses, to take a prognostic look at the future.
Further information can be found on www.paraflows.at
Please submit proposals featuring contemporary artworks dealing with the topics mentioned above.
Pls send PDF-files via e-mail to utopia(at)paraflows.at or post mail to:

Bill Drummond - The 17 (317. REPEAT) - Derby Quad, 22 August 2008

Bill Drummond The 17 (317. REPEAT) - Opportunity to take part
The first major event to launch the new QUAD building ‘The 17’ (317. REPEAT) will take place on August 22nd in Derby’s Market Place and we need your voice! Quad have invited renowned artist and musician Bill Drummond, to create a unique performance piece the performance will involve a cross section of the community currently living or working in the Derby city. We are looking for 100 groups of 17 people from all over Derby who fall into the categories listed on the Quad website: http://www.derbyquad.co.uk/whats-on/other-events/the17
For example you may be a Nurse, Cyclist, Mad Scientist, D.J. or even a Loser! You may be an individual or established group or maybe you just know someone who you think would like to take part. ‘The 17’ is a choir, but you do not have to be able to sing well to take part (in fact you may even be tone deaf). Bill Drummond will be running sessions to record 100 groups of 17 Derby people between 10th June and July 18th. All groups of 17 will be recorded together making one note with their voices for five minutes, they will also have a group photo and a short video portrait will be filmed. The whole session will last for 45 minutes, but you’ll be taking part in a historic and ground breaking project that will be interesting, engaging and fun. The 100 separate sound recordings will be mixed together to create one huge sound piece that will have its one and only performance on the 22nd August and afterwards will be deleted forever! All participants will be invited as Quad’s Special Guests to a private view reception and personal tour of QUAD. The film will show on the BBC Big Screen and inside QUAD, and the photographs will be included in the exhibition inside QUAD and published in a special ‘The 17’ (317. REPEAT) book. For more information on the groups, the project in general or to register your email the17 [at] derbyquad.co.uk or call Alfredo Cramerotti on 01332 295897 or visit www.derbyquad.co.uk. ‘The 17’ (317. REPEAT) is a major QUAD commission by internationally renowned artist Bill Drummond and is supported by Radleigh Homes and BAF Graphics.

Andy Campbell at the Institute of Creative Technologies (IOCT), De Montfort University, Leicester, UK on 31st January 2008. Supported by the Arts Council England.
Since the 1990’s Andy Campbell has experimented with the possibilities of writing fiction for the computer screen and, although most people still consider fiction something they’d read from a book, an explosion of blogs, online journals, text-based “web art” projects and the introduction of electronic portable reading devices has generated a new wave of mashed up narrative experiments and intrigued (often confused) audiences.
Andy Campbell’s website Dreaming Methods combines fictional narratives with other media such as film, photography, animation and music. The results are highly challenging but compelling reading experiences that explore dream inspired states, the subconscious and the deterioration of memory. Projects are often visually haunting and atmospherically immersive where the text itself floats, mutates and gets entangled with motion graphics creating powerful ’scenes’ throughout the ’story’.
At this event Andy presented recent Dreaming Methods projects on a big screen, including a preview of a new project “Clearance”, an apocalyptic digital fiction created with film-maker Judi Alston. The talk will included discussion around the possibilities of new forms of electronic narratives - from full-blown cinematic multimedia to exciting new e-book standards.
