Toni Sant: A Second Life for Online Performance History

Doors open at 5.30pm for drinks. This event is free and open to the public, however places are limited - visit the cultural eXchanges website to reserve a seat.

Download the flyer for this event (PDF)

Toni Sant in Second LifeToni Sant is exploring the 3-D online virtual environment called Second Life as a venue for performance by looking at examples of theatre groups performing online within Second Life. In addition to activities presented as theatre he is also observing broader performance activities within this online space. Additionally, this project involves an attempt to use Second Life as a pedagogical tool for generating an archive of work related to a history of performance on the Internet by relating it to previous work on other online virtual environments, such as IRC, MUDs, MOOs, and 2-D graphic chat networks like The Palace. Presently, the work revolves around a planned Second Life production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in one of three simulations of The Globe in this popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

Toni Sant in Second LifeThis event takes place as part of cultural eXchanges, an annual event hosted by the Faculty of Humanities at De Montfort University. The week long programme includes lectures, performances, debates, presentations and readings from a diverse body of artists, academics, practioners and those working in the cultural industries. Previous guests have included Janet Street-Porter, Alastair Campbell, Andrew Davies, Corin Redgrave, Matthew Sweeney, Jenny Colgan, Sue Mcgregor, Roy Hattersley, Tony Hawks, Germaine Greer, Jackie Kay and Colin Dexter.

ESRC Business Engagement Scheme, Creative Industries - deadline 31 March 2008

BUSINESS ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES – Creative Industries

Central Government initiatives have been developed to position the UK as an economy able to deliver unique value in global business markets. In line with these initiatives the ESRC has developed its Business Engagement Strategy. The Creative Industries are a success story within the UK economy, and have been identified by the ESRC as a key sector to help develop. How do we sustain our position as a creative nation? How do funders, universities and creative entrepreneurs map the way forward, or do we trust the existing infrastructure to inspire innovation?

This call focuses on business engagement and provides opportunities for social science researchers to engage with the creative and cultural industries, to encourage knowledge transfer and exchange to assist business sustainability. The ESRC encourages engagement with business through a tailored package of new and additional activity. Funding of up to £100k per successful application is available for a combination of activities, ideally with co-funding partners.

The call aims to:
• promote the transfer and exchange of knowledge between social science researchers and the creative industries and staff within them
• respond to the knowledge needs of business through a range of knowledge exchange mechanisms
• expand networks for business sectors into academia and vice-versa
• provide business sectors with research-informed evidence to develop and review operational and management practices
• enable all parties, including the ESRC, to develop their understanding of the interaction between research and the development of operational and management practices within business sectors
• contribute to the delivery of the Government’s Science and Innovation Investment Framework.

ORLAN at Goldsmiths College, London, 5 February 2008, 6.15pm

5 February 2008

ORLAN at Goldsmiths
http://www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/drama/orlan.php

Tuesday 5 February 2008
6.15pm THE THEATRE
Department of Drama

The Department of Drama’s Performance Research Forum and the Digital Studios’ (Department of Computing) Thursday Club are delighted to co-host this special event, a TALK by one of the most original and provocative woman artists working today in what she calls CARNAL ART.

“Unlike ‘Body Art’, from which I set it apart, Carnal Art does not desire pain as a means of redemption, or to attain purification. Carnal Art does not wish to achieve a final ‘plastic’ result, but rather seeks to modify the body, and engage in public debate. Carnal Art is not against cosmetic surgery but, rather against the conventions carried by it and their subsequent inscription, within female flesh in particular, but also male. Carnal Art is feminist, that is necessary. It is interested not only in cosmetic surgery, but also advanced techniques in medicine and biology that question the status of the body and the ethical questions posed by them”
- ORLAN

All welcome. Entrance free. Latecomers will not be admitted.

To book this event, call 020 7919 7422.
