ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art - Open Call, deadline 26 March 2008

ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art, an international biannual dvd publication, is currently accepting submissions of work best documented in a time-based format for Volume 12: Vital. This issue will explore that which is essential, grave, indispensable, and/or critical to existence.

In addition to seeking artists, the staff of ASPECT is asking curators, art critics, and members of the contemporary art community to help assemble and comment on works for the next issue by submitting a work of art on which they wish to provide audio commentary. Due to the format of the publication, the criteria for selection will include both the qualifications of the commentator and the quality of the work submitted. Audio recordings of the commentary will be assembled after the submissions have been selected.

Submissions should include:
- Video documentation of a work or small group of works by a single artist (5-10 minutes)
- A brief (100 word) statement regarding the submitted work
- Resume of the artist
- Contact information for the commentator and artist
- Resume of the commentator
- Brief notes outlining the contents of the proposed commentary

Submissions must be received by March 26, 2008 and sent to:

Artober is a multidisciplinary contemporary art festival running from the 13th- 28th October, in Leicester, featuring 2 Exhibitions and 2 Open Studios.

The launch takes place on Saturday October 13th from 7pm upstairs at the Firebug Bar. There’ll be music by Aurelie and Mai 68s, improvised noise from Phillip Henderson, and a brand new proto-ballet from Richard Peel.

Over the following 2 weeks there will be Exhibitions at the LCB Depot and Pocklington Gallery, where you can find work from painting and sculpture to photography and video, and Open Studios at Knighton Lane Studios and Leicester Print Workshop.

Additionally you’ll be able to see work around the city including the Phoenix Arts Centre and De Montfort University.

Matthew Linley, Director of Phoenix Arts (www.phoenix.org.uk) will present and discuss the latest developments of Leicester’s upcoming Digital Media Centre.

Anna Petry, Digital Arts Officer at Broadway (www.broadway.org.uk) will lead a discussion about the challenges of exhibiting digital and screen based work and the potential criteria for the perfect exhibition space along with Sue Thomas, Professor of New Media, and Chris Joseph, Digital Writer-in-Residence, both from the Institute of Creative Technologies at De Montfort University.

The Camargo Foundation Fellowships - deadline 12 January 2008

The Camargo Foundation welcomes applications from composers, writers, and visual artists pursuing specific projects and from scholars pursuing studies in the humanities and social sciences relating to French and francophone cultures. The interdisciplinary residency program is intended to give fellows the time and space they need to realise their projects. The Foundation’s hillside campus overlooks the Mediterranean Sea in Cassis, France; it includes thirteen furnished apartments, a reference library, and three art/music studios. Fellows are provided with accommodation on campus and a stipend of $2,500. Residencies are one semester (either early-September to mid-December or mid-January to the end of May).

Qualified candidates from all countries and nationalities are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is January 12 for either semester of the following academic year.

Free online digital cinema course

TENCompetence partner, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona is launching a new distance learning pilot as part of its plan to disseminate digital cinema technology and provide a virtual learning environment where professionals, students, and amateurs can develop their competences and skills in producing and directing digital cinema projects.

The distance learning pilot offers an introductory course on Virtual Sets Design in cooperation with Brainstorm software. The course comprises around a hundred hours of learning activities that can be freely accessed by learners. This service will be launched on October 1st and will be available for people to join over an ongoing period of at least two months.

As well as providing the opportunity for subscribers to increase their digital cinema competences and knowledge, the pilot also enables learners to meet and cooperate with other professionals and scholars in the field.

Registration for the course is free of charge since the pilot will be used to validate the underlying learning infrastructure.
