391.org dadacast #1

In 2006 391.org and Dada YOW! begin broadcasting audio podcasts in three varieties (’tymecasts’, ‘knotcasts’ and ‘dadacasts’) that featured a huge range of long-term and new collaborators. We put out 17 casts in a 6 month period, consisting of over 4.5 hours of original audio material that ranged from the sublime to the utterly ridiculous, all in the name of dada.

In preparation for a new round of dadacasts this year, I will be posting last year’s dadacasts here. Click the link below to stream the audio in this window.

h2ptm’07 - deadline 15 March 2007

Collaborate, Exchange, Invent : Network Experiences
October 29-31 2007 - Hammamet, Tunisia

Laboratoire PARAGRAPHE of Paris 8 University (France) and the Ecole Nationale des Sciences de l’Informatique de l’Université de la Manouba (Tunisia), under the partonage of the Tunesian Assiciation for Artificial Intelligence, co-organize the 9th edition of H2PTM : Hypertextes, Hypermédias

OBJECTIFS

This 9th edition of the H2PTM conference series will take place in Hammamet, Tunesia, restating the now classic themes that initiated the first conference and confirm its continuity since. With attention to recent developments, however, it progressively expands the thematic area into several directions.

Hypermedia tools are above anything else instruments of creation and it is hypermedia where the new products and works of the digital universe are created. The conference thus accords a large part to the problems of product development and artistic creation. It emphasizes - among other things - the question of the “digital author”. The fast paced development of 3D, animation, and interaction technologies stirs at the same time an interest in video and computer games which will be part of H2PTM this year. The conference will also tackle the question of “exchange”, which lies at the heart of network practices. Finally, it will closely examine the notion of the digital document from the point of view of its creation, transmission and conservation.

Having arrived at a point of maturity, the conference seeks to establish a perspective on the evolution of its centers of interest and - after a lot of experimentation - to come back to the question of experience. This concept will therefore play the role of a red line: user experience, author experience, capitalized experience, lived experience, transmitted experience; this way, the anthropological dimension of hypermedia will be examined and underlined.

The Voice-Activated R2-D2 at Hammacher Schlemmer

r2d2www.hammacher.com/publish/72698.asp

This motorized replica of the headstrong little droid from the Star Wars films responds to voice commands, navigates rooms and hallways, and makes any home feel like it has been transported to a galaxy far, far away. R2 obeys more than 40 voice commands (Turn around! Move forward two units!) and he plays games like tag, using an infra-red sensor to search for people in a room. His sensor helps him follow behind you, or it can be set to detect motion, turning R2 into a room sentry that sounds an alarm when a secured area is invaded. R2s lights, swiveling dome top, and distinctive happy and sad sounds faithfully mimic the real thing, right down to his occasional bad mood. (A simple command of, R2, behave yourself! snaps him out of it.) R2 can also replay sounds and dialog from Star Wars movies, answer yes-or-no questions, and dance while playing the famed cantina music. Requires four AA batteries and four D batteries (not included). Minor assembly required. Ages 8 and up. 15″ H x 7 1/2″ W x 10 1/2″ L. (6 lbs.) $119.95 - Expected ship date 02/16/2007.

“That, to me, is the most important thing. I want to see things that no one’s ever seen before.”- Tom DeFanti, SIGGRAPH Pioneer

In the three decades since SIGGRAPH participants first gathered to show each other their 16mm films, the Computer Animation Festival has grown into the premier event for the world’s most innovative and accomplished films made using the computer. SIGGRAPH 2007 Art Gallery: Global Eyes - deadline 19 January 2007

http://www.siggraph.org/s2007/presenters/art/

Art Gallery: Global Eyes

The enormous speed by which digital media reach previously isolated cultures around the world catalyzes a rapid integration of visual and media languages across the digital and physical spectrum. There is a need to understand not only ethnic cultures and the vocabularies of their traditional media, but also how these cultures and languages transform and are being transformed by digital media, especially computer graphics. What role do digital media play in the connected global context?

Global Eyes, the SIGGRAPH 2007 Art Gallery, is accepting submissions of artwork that expand our humanity by extending our awareness of people and nature. Wearing these new digital “glasses,” how do we see each other and our world in alternative ways?

We are looking for works that:

  • Illuminate the role digital media play in shaping, extending, and reflecting world views and cosmologies.
  • Address ecological, social, and political issues in imaginative and innovative ways.
  • Foster respect, tolerance, and empathy among people and nations.

Creative and critical works exploring relationships between people and their environment, connections between biodiversity and cultural diversity, and related ethical issues are welcome. A special invitation is extended to artist-scientists (including collaborations) actively engaged in these investigations.

We encourage participation by people who are working creatively in all cultures, including the developing world and indigenous communities, with a combination of physical and digital processes, including (but not limited to) digital photography and digital video, handcrafts, folk and fine art, ethnography, and world music.

By actively bringing the richness of the world’s cultural traditions to the field of computer graphics and interactive media, we hope to catalyze understanding and collaboration across cultures, and contribute to development of a more intelligent, responsible, and democratic world language.
