chris joseph
digital writer in residence, the institute of creative technologies, de montfort university, leicester, uk
What is a digital writer, anyway?

I create electronic literature, multimedia and interactive art, which may include text, images and video, sounds, music and reader/viewer participation. The Electronic Literature Organization have a useful definition of e-lit:
works with important literary aspects that take advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the stand-alone or networked computer.

My recent projects include Flight Paths, a 'networked novel' funded by the Arts Council England; Inanimate Alice, a series of interactive multimedia stories; and The Breathing Wall, a digital novel that responds to the reader's breathing rate.

I am currently Digital Writer in Residence at the Institute of Creative Technologies in De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. The IOCT fosters creative research and collaboration across disciplines that have traditionally been kept separate (art and design, music, humanities, computer science and engineering), and encourages transdisciplinary collaboration between individuals and organisations within the university and at local, national and international levels.

My residency is funded by the Arts Council England, and involves

  • supporting regional digital practitioners through mentoring, workshops and creative surgeries
  • increasing the profile of electronic literature and art and interdisciplinary creative practice through regular IOCT Salons
  • responding to the the work of the IOCT in my own creative practice
