391 was first published by the poet/artist Francis Picabia in 1917 and was a bridge between the Zürich Dadaists, French Surrealists, Marcel Duchamp and others.
391.org was first published in 2000 to explore and extend the ideas of the early avant-garde artists in new media. It terms this extension MADA (Multimedia-dADA), and uses several techniques to disrupt the traditional relationships between and expectations of artist/distributor/audience, including programming, interactivity, kineticism and (hyper)dimensionality to complement the original dadaist practices of chance/chaos, multiple identities/masks, collaboration, simultaneity and tomfoolery.
Since 2000 391.org has published over 20 multimedia issues created with worldwide collaborators, and numerous sound-based podcasts, manifestos and other works.
